Death: Jan. 20, 1878

One of Minnesotas earliest settlers, he is credited with building the first house in the area that became Minneapolis (near Lake Calhoun). In 1834 Gideon Hollister Pond came to Minnesota from Connecticut as a Presbyterian Minister to the Dakota Indians (Lakhota Sioux). He learned the Dakota language, wrote a Dakota dictionary and translated the Bible into Dakota. From 1843 to 1852 he ran the Oak Grove Indian Mission, near the Minnesota River, in an area that later became the City of Bloomington. The brick home he built on the site in 1856, has been restored, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. -
