Mary Ann Primm married William Flemon Cowan on Dec. 2, 1839 in Limestone Co., Alabama. The Handbook of Texas Online indicates William & Mary Ann were among the earliest settlers of Katemcy, Mason Co., Texas. William served the small community as a doctor and Mary Ann, as a midwife. Their sons, John, Elias and Alfred Cowan built a sawmill, gristmill and a cotton gin on nearby Katemcy Creek. Alfred opened the first store in that community and in 1884 he became the first postmaster.
Mary Ann helped raise three of William's sons by an earlier marriage: Joseph H., William Flemon. Jr., and James Moses Cowan.
Mary Ann and William's children were: Martha Jane (m.Thomas Preston Edgin Agent); Mary Elizabeth (m. Wm. Welcome Wilhelm); John Abraham (m. Susan Emmaline Haile); Louisa T.; Emily C. (m. Adcock); Sarah Arkansas (m. George W. Allison); Elias Harrison Cowan; Josephine Paralee (m.James Gibson Smith); Maranda; and Alfred Riley (m. Martha Tennessee Tabor).
