Sam married Ora Evaline Baker on Feb. 2, 1907 in Keystone, (then Creek nation) and they had seven children whom they raised in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas: Earnest Lee, Esther Edna, Roy Edwin, Lloyd Earl, Annabelle, Sam and Ruby Carol.

Sam's mother, Lucy Anna, and his baby sister, Sara Ann, died in Catoosa of illness in February of 1888. He and his dad, Dick Childers, moved near his Uncle Henry Wilson Ackley in what is now Pryor Creek, OK. When both his dad and uncle died in February of 1891, young Sam moved to Keystone in Oklahoma Territory to be raised by his maternal grandparents, Samuel Ackley and Sarah Jane Rush Ackley, and his Uncle Abe and his wife, Josie Ackley.
