Melissa "Mel" C. Galka, 17, of Granby, beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece and cousin, passed away Tuesday, (September 28, 2004) at Hartford Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1987 in Newburyport, MA, she is the beloved daughter of Gary and Cindy (Lovett) Galka. She had lived in Suffield for ten years and moved to Granby four years ago. A senior at Granby Memorial High School she was very athletic and attained a level nine gymnast rating and was a member of the Granby gymnastic team. She also did well in track and field and enjoyed working out at the gym while holding part time employment at Bill Selig Jewelers in Simsbury. She was preparing to enter college after graduation in pursuit of a degree in Interior Design and Business Management. A beautiful, strong, vivacious young woman with a wonderful smile and a true zest for life.
Besides her parents she leaves the love of her life, Ben Caplan of Granby; her two loving younger sisters, Jennifer and Heather at home; her maternal great grandmother, Edna "Mim" Belliveau; her maternal grandparents, James and Louise Lovett of South Windsor; and her paternal grandfather, Joseph J. Galka of Glastonbury. She was predeceased by her grandmother, Jane Galka. She also leaves aunts and uncles, Karen and Joel Grant in California, James and Jane Lovett of South Windsor, William Lovett of Ellington, Linda and Ernest Crabtree of New Jersey, and Debra Galka of Glastonbury; cousins, Taylor, Gavin, Cameron Lovett and Katherine and Elizabeth Crabtree; and her faithful dog and companion, Holly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, October 2, 10 a.m. at St. Therese Church, 120 West Granby Rd., Granby. Burial will be in Granby Cemetery. Her family will receive friends Friday, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Melissa C. Galka Scholarship Fund, c/o Granby Memorial High School, 315 Salmon Brook St., Granby, CT 06035.
