David Gardiner Ackerly was born on January 23, 1846 to Lydia and Peter Ackerly in Natural Bridge, Rockbridge Co., Virginia. He had a twin brother, Shanklin M.("Shank").
He was named for the doctor who delivered him, David Gardiner Houston. The boys were part of a family of 14 children, 7 boys & 7 girls.
When the twins were 17, they joined Company C, 14th Virginia Cavalry and rode their way through the rest of the Civil War. They joined their 4 other brothers who were fighting for the South. After the war, David left Virginia and moved west, first to Missouri and then to Nebraska. The oldest daughter, Minnie, died in Schuylar, Colfax, Neb in 1892. In 1894 he moved with his wife and remaining daughter to the new settlement of Pearland, Texas. Unfortunately, his wife, Echolean, died shortly after in Aug. of 1894.
