Grosse Pointe Park Patrolman Lanstra and his partner, Patrolman Erhardt Meyer were shot and killed by the driver of a vehicle stopped in the investigation of a hit-and-run accident. The occupants of the vehicle were in fact, gangsters involved in bootlegging activities. Two men were convicted of killing the officers, one dying in prison the other acquitted after appealing and receiving a retrial.

Officers Lanstra and Meyer were the first Grosse Pointe officers to die in the line of duty.
