Our "Grandma Boerum" was a lovely person, she gave warm deep hugs, and I truly respected her in every way. She deserved a better life than she had, but she never gave up and she lived a good long life and was dearly loved. She loved her children and gave our mom her dream wedding and ensured that mom always had a ready babysitter. She was a great mom and a wonderful Grandmother.

Who was Alma?

The name Alma was a popular Latin and Celtic name. It means "Of the Soul" in Latin and "Good" in Celtic.

Alma R Clark Boerum was born in Norwalk, Connecticut in 1904. The daughter of Eugene Clark, a Norwalk Trolley Driver, and Ruth Ralston Clark. Alma grew up in a modest but loving family losing her only brother to diabetes at an early age.

Alma married Raymond C. Boerum and they had two children: Lois Alma and Chester "Sonny". The Boerums divorced when the children were young due to Raymond's failings and Alma was left to raise her children on her own.

She had to take factory jobs to support herself and her two children.

Alma was an intelligent and caring woman and suffered deeply from the divorce. She taught herself to be independent and found an inner strength to keep going.

Alma did have a great sense of humor and was wealth of common sense and great family stories.

Alma often cared for her grandchildren in the evenings while her daughter worked. She never complained about having to work long days and then spend hours watching a housefull of children.

She had seven grandchildren.

Grandma took pleasure in having pets and always had cats and dogs. Her last two pets were a Jack Russel and a little black puff ball of a Poodle that my dad gave her for Christmas.

When Grandma's health began to fail due to Alzheimers, mom and dad moved her to Titusville Florida which she really loved. She enjoyed the beach and the short trips they took her on. She was amazed to see the shuttle take off and once told me that she didn't believe it was true until she actually saw it.
