Samuel Henry Schell
Birth: Jan. 1, 1836
Dauphin County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Dec. 18, 1905
Dauphin County
Pennsylvania, USA

Samuel Schell died at his home on Broad St. in Williamstown, on Monday evening at 8 o'clock, of heart failure, after an illness of four days, aged 78 years, 11 months and 17 days. Deceased was born in Wiconisco January 1, 1832, and was confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church January 14, 1855, by Rev. Fell. Later he moved to Donaldson where he followed his occupation as a miner. When the call came for volunteers to suppress the rebellion of 1861-65 in the South, he enlisted in Co. C, 36th Regiment Pa. Vol., and served until he was honorably discharged. After the war he returned to his work in the mines at Donaldson where he lost his sight .

He was married twice, his first wife, Hannah Umholtz, having died 11 years ago, the following children surviving: Amelia, (Mrs. E. Artz), of Clarks Valley; Lincoln and George of Donaldson; Etta, (Mrs. Jas. Drum), of Tower City; Clara, (Mrs. Chas. Welker), of Williamstown, and Harvey of Pottsville. On May 28, 1898, he married Jennie A., daughter of Benjamin Welker and wife of Loyalton, who with two children, Charles E. and Carrie survive him. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Charles Schell, Mrs. Julia Young, and Melinda Schell of Dayton; Mrs. Elijah Schott of Williamstown, Michael Schell of Paul's Valley, and Mrs. Sarah Deveny of Millersburg.

The funeral was held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, services being conducted at his late home by Rev. King, and interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery, Tower City. The pallbearers were selected from the Grand Army, of which deceased was a member.

(Although the obituary lists Samuel's birth as 1832, this was not possible, because his parents did not wed until 1834-35. Most census records agree that Samuel was born about 1836-37.)

The explosion which blinded Samuel and left him severely disabled, must of happened sometime after 1880. The 1880 lists his occupation as a miner.
