John was a son of John and Mary (Kennedy) Graham. He emigrated from Ireland, sailing from Liverpool on August 19, 1911, on the SS Celtic, arriving in New York on August 29 and became a naturalized US citizen September 2, 1919. He enlisted in the US Army on November 13, 1917. He was discharged June 30, 1919, and enlisted in the Air Corps November 19, 1920, and was assigned to the 31st Balloon Company at Fort Knox, Kentucky. From there he was transferred to the 18th Airship Company at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland where he met his future wife, Gladys May Miller, daughter of George and Sarah V. Miller. They married in Washington, DC, August 23, 1923. He enlisted in the US Air Force December 14, 1948, at Orlando Air Force Base in Florida. He retired October 31, 1949 after serving 30 years, 6 months, 20 days active military service. His decorations and citations included a Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Defense Ribbon, and American Theater Ribbon. He and Gladys had 3 children: Helen, John and Andrew.
