Herman Blum, a retired major in the U.S. Army, died Thursday of complications from heart disease. He was 81.
Blum was born in New Haven, Conn., the eldest of five brothers. His father, Abraham Blum, was a Yiddish playwright.
Blum entered the Army in 1941 as a private. He served in the European Theater during World War II, and distinguished himself at the Battle of the Bulge. Blum also served in military intelligence in Korea and in 1952 was responsible for a critical discovery of Chinese troops in the region, according to neighbor and family friend Etta Gold.
During his military career, Blum was awarded many medals, which he later distributed among his various nephews. His service inspired granddaughter Carle Reinoso, a Miami-Dade police officer.
''He was the father I never had,'' she said.
In 1966, Blum retired to Miami. In his 50s, he then studied education at the University of Miami and social work at Florida International University. He was a member of FIU's first graduating class, Gold said.
''He pursued education for the sake of helping others. That was the hallmark of his life,'' she said.
Blum volunteered as a boxing judge for youths in the Police Athletic League and served as a volleyball coach. He was also a substitute teacher in local public schools.
In addition to his granddaughter, Blum is survived by his wife of 51 years, Beatrice; daughter Sara; and brothers Monte and Calvin.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Mount Nebo Kendall Memorial Gardens and Chapel in South Miami, 5900 SW 77th Ave.
