He received a Bachelor of science degree in 1937. He was a wonderful musician, and he played the trumpet in the Walt Disney Disneyland Marching Band for many years. A very dear man! Archie Furr, 79, dies; he was retired teacher Archie R. Furr, 79, of Rossmoor, an oil distributor, almond grower and teacher while living in Tracy for more than four decades, died Wednesday moring in a Pleasnat Hill convalescent hospital. A native of Stockham Neb., he grew up in Sterling, Colo./ and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, receiving a bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1937. During World War II, Mr Furr was an officer in the U.S. Navy, in charge of gunnery crews on merchants ships and also serving as a sonar officer on a destroyer in the Pacific. Following the war, he moved to Tracy in 1946 and purchased the Associated Oil Co. distributorship from Frank Foster. In 1958, Mr. Furr sold the oil firm and prchased an almond orchard on Durham Ferry Road from the late Alfred Lehman. In 1967, Mr Furr antered teaching, starting as a sixth grade teacher at Central School. He later moved to the frouth grade level, also at Central, before retiring in 1982. He moved in 1990 to Rossmoor, the retirement community near Walnut Creek, and had been a patient in the convalescent hospital for the past five weeks. A musician who had been an honor band trumpet player in high school and in college, Mr. Furr retained his interest in music in community groups and as a teacher. He was a past president and, in recent years, an honorary member of the Tracy Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He had served as a member of the board of directors of Tracy Community Memorial Hospital and was an honorary life member of the Central School PTA. Mr. Furr was a longtime active member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder and choir director. Surviivors include his wife of 54 years, Florence Furr of Rossmoor; a daughter, Mary, and three grandchildren. Inurnment will be later at Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver.
