Mary Cathren "Mary Kay" Varvel Hanes
Birth: Feb. 5, 1855
Adams County
Ohio, USA
Death: Jun. 28, 1939
Woodland (Iroquois County)
Iroquois County
Illinois, USA

Mary Kay was a daughter of John Wesley Varvel and his wife, Rosa Anna Bowens. She married first to Samuel Veach Hanes a son of Sarah Ann Ross and John Haines. They married circa 1871 in Adams County, Ohio. They had six known children, five of which lived to adulthood. After Sam passed away, Mary married Sam's widowed brother, John M. Haynes. Mary Kay had jet black hair; coal black eyes; a stocky build and ruddy complexion. She stood 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 183 pounds. Her death was due to ailments of advance age. She had been seriously ill for two months prior to her death.

FAMILY NOTE: Mary Kay could only write and read at first grade level, but she could recite the "Holy Scriptures" word for word, chapter by chapter.

REFERENCE NOTE: Eva Irene (nee Hanes) Pierce statements to Corky Logan for school ancestral research project in early 1960's. Irene related that her grandmother smoked a pipe and was part Indian. The only proof of Indian heritage comes from Mary Cathren (nee Varvel) Hanes having to denounce her Indian heritage or move to Oklahoma, this was done circa 1903. Original paper is on file at Iroquois County Genealogical Society. It states Mary Cathren's mother was a halfbreed Iroquois Indian, of Ohio.

DEATH CERTIFICATE: Illinois; Iroquois County, certificate #0000020.

FUNERAL RECORDS: Segur-Knapp Funeral Home; Wateska (Iroquois County), Illinois.

OBITUARY NOTICE: Iroquois County Democrat; article dated February 2, 1939.
