OBITUARY:
Leroy H. Murphy 70, died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis, following an extended illness. He was a resident of Franklin and a former resident of Indianapolis.
He was born February 25, 1934 in Indianapolis to Milton and Josephine (Snyder) Murphy. He graduated from Southport High School in 1952. He graduated from the Purdue University School of Agriculture in 1956. At Purdue he was a charter member of Farmhouse Fraternity and a member of the All American Marching Band. Leroy served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1958, he was deployed in Germany and discharged with the rank of Specialist-4. He returned to Perry Township and was engaged in farming in partnership with his father and brother on a farm operated by the Murphy family since the 1870's. He retired from farming in 1992 and moved to Franklin, IN.
Leroy is survived by his mother Josephine Murphy of Marion, IN; four children Dr. Duane (Anita) Murphy of Dubois, IN, Bryan (Capricia) Murphy of Waterford, MI, Shannon (Thomas) Pinson of Beaumont, TX and Lloyd (Libby) Murphy of San Francisco, CA; eight grandchildren Joshua Murphy, Charlotte, Patrick and Collin Murphy, Marisa and Liana Pinson, Jordan and Claire Murphy; sisters Marietta (Julius) Fliehler of Titusville, FL and Door County, WI, H. Frances Petroff of Marion, IN and Agatha (Jerry) Baldwin of Lancaster, PA and brother Gilbert (Alene) Murphy of Indianapolis, IN. He is also survived by his special friend Virginia Edwards and long-time friend and mother of his children Rose Murphy, both of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his father.
Leroy was a faithful and active member of Edgewood United Methodist Church, since his youth. He was a member of the Chancel Choir, the Harmony Sunday School Class and served on several church committees during his life. He was also actively involved in the Greenwood Camp of Gideons International, Marion County Farm Bureau, Inc., where he served as president for six years, Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District board member, Perry Township 4-H Advisory Board, Franklin Senior Center, Meals on Wheels and served on the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Board.
Rev. Dr. Kenneth Burcham and Rev. John Cheeseman. will conduct a funeral service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Edgewood United Methodist Church, 1820 E. Epler Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46227. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Wilson St. Pierre Chapel, Greenwood. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
