Daddy was born at Turners, MO, the third of nine children of Otto and Ethel Mooneyham Turner. The town (Turners Station) was named for his great grandmother who was the first postmistress of the little town. He attended Crystal school, a little one room rural school. From 1936 to 1942 he worked as a farm hand for Joe Gault. In 1942 he entered the Army Air Corps at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO. He was trained in fighter armament at Buckley Field, CO then gunnery school at Lorado Field, TX. He then was assigned to a B-24 crew member as a tail gunner at Davis Monthan Field, Tuscon, AZ. The group was assigned to the 392nd Bomb Group. In August, 1943 they departed for Wendling, England. He completed 30 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, 5 Air Medals for destruction of enemy aircraft, and the European Theater of Operations Ribbon with three battle stars. After the war was over he returned to civilian life and married Patrica Porter, the love of his life. He re-enlisted on 29 Aug 1947 in the US Air Force. He was stationed at McChord AFB, WA, Mountain Home AFB, ID, Travis AFB, CA, Korea, McConnell AFB. KS, Anderson AFB, Guam and Plattsburgh AFB, NY. On 18 Jan 1966 he was honorably discharged after recovering from his first heart attack. He had served 21 years, 3 months and 26 days. He and my mother retired to Derby, KS where he worked for Sears Automotive Center until his death. He was an avid golfer and gardener and very active in the Lions Club, being President one year. He loved children and was a wonderful grandfather to his 5 grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor and was frequently laughing and joking around which endeared him to everyone around him. After 5 heart attacks and 2 separate by-pass surgeries he died peacefully in his sleep of a massive heart attack. My mother found him at 11:00 in the evening in bed with a smile on his face and the Readers Digest across his chest. God blessed him and took him home gently. He never got to know his 10 great grandchildren and great grandson but they are all being raised knowing what an incredible man he was. He is missed greatly and remembered always.
