Petty Officer 2nd Class (SEAL) Adam O. Smith, 26, of Hurland, Mo., assigned to an East Coast-based SEAL Team. He died in a helicopter crash Sept. 21 during combat operations in the Zabul province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Adam enlisted Oct. 27, 2004, and was formally advanced to second class July 16. After recruit training, he attended school at the Naval Air Technical Training Command in Pensacola, Fla., before reporting to NSW in March 2005. After SEAL qualification training, Smith was assigned to an east coast SEAL Team, where he excelled as a special warfare operator, making numerous deployments in support of overseas contingency operations. Smith is described by fellow SEALs as a highly decorated combat veteran and dedicated teammate. His awards include the Joint Service Achievement Medal; Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; the National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. Adam is survived by his mother, Michele Jorgenson, and her husband, Dr. James Jorgenson, of Macon; his father, Eric Smith and wife, Theresa of Columbia; seven sisters, Amber Pikey and husband Brad of St. Louis, Audrey Ford and husband Jessye of Bevier, Abigail Roberts and husband Corey of Bevier, Aliana Perkins of Macon, Anna Perkins of Macon, Angel Harrison of Macon, and Lindsey Smith of Columbia; three brothers, Andrew Smith of Columbia, Austen Harrison of Macon and Zackary Smith of Columbia; great-grandmother Frances Blackorby of Bevier; grandparents Gene and Lucille Smith of Scott, La., and Katherine and Stan Lay of Bevier; 10 nieces and nephews; girlfriend, Charlotte Ange of Virginia Beach; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by great-grandfather Harvey Olin Blackorby; grandfather, Gordon Keith McPherson; and great-grandparents Herschel and Marie Smith.
