Patron of the Arts, Horticulturalist, Gentleman. Son of Whitney Warren, Sr. (1864-1943), and Charlotte Tooker Warren (1864-1951). Whitney Warren, Jr. was quite simply the most civilized man in San Francisco. He knew how to live! While in his adopted 'City by the Bay' he worked, on weekends, for the Fine Arts Museum and the San Francisco Opera Association, which he loved, serving on the Board of Directors. He entertained, dazzlingly, in his elegant home at the top of Telegraph Hill; furnished with the sophisticated taste and European flair he inherited from his father ~ the great architect, Whitney Warren, Sr. During the week, he would go out to his ranch near Sacramento, where he lived in a little Basque-style house, and on which he produced the finest peaches and almonds to be had anywhere. In the spring his gardens burst forth with camellias, tree peonies, and roses of every color and size imaginable.
There was a special depth to Whitney that resisted definition, and that revealed itself in unexpected ways. One day, walking with guests through his luxuriant acres, they came to a great field of rich soft earth planted with rows of tiny trees; which were barely more than leafing twigs protruding from their little mounds. Whitney said with pride. "These are my new pear trees. Just planted this year. How beautiful they will be when they are grown! Yes, they WILL be beautiful!" And he smiled. "But they are very slow growers, and I will not live to see them." ~ As recalled by his great friend, Billy Baldwin.
