At an early age, Lizzie joined Sandy Run African Methodist Episcopal Church in Devereux (Hancock County), Georgia. She attended elementary school in Hancock Couty, Georgia where she aspired to be a teacher. However the opportunity was denied her because the county had no high school for black children.
Lizzie married Grover Cleveland Simmons, Sr. on December 31, 1910 in Devereux (Hancock County), Georgia. This union produced seven children. After the family moved to Rockdale County, Georgia, they joined Rock Temple A. M. E. Church where she and her husband remained active members until their death.
