James H. Patterson was born in Augusta Co., Virginia, the son of Elijah Ledgerwood Patterson and Drusilla Tate (Henry) Patterson. When he was still an infant, his family moved to Henry County, Indiana, and then to Henry County, Iowa, in 1842.
Patterson enlisted as a Private in Co. C of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Sept 24, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 25, 1861, and was elected 1st Sergeant of Co. C. As of Dec 19, 1861, he became an "Acting 2nd Lieutenant," but was never commissioned. On June 15, 1862, he became the 2nd Battalion Quartermaster
Later, in 1862, the War Dept. issued General Order 126 of 1862 to relieve all "supernumerary" officers (those above the authorized numbers). Rather than return to the Company as a Private, Patterson was mustered out on Nov 17, 1862.
After his discharge, Patterson returned to Iowa, where he married Mary Francis (Fannie) Wallace on Oct 8, 1863. They became prominent citizens of Winfield, active Republicans, and the parents of 6 children.
He applied for his government pension on Sept 5, 1891. His application is #1,053,610, and his certificate #725,490.
Eventually Patterson moved to the warmer climate in Santa Ana, Orange Co., California, where he died of a stroke April 12, 1914, while attending Sunday services at his church.
