Becky "Lucky" was born in our basement, the daughter of Spooky and Mamma Jane. Several other kittens from this litter were later placed in good homes. The day Mamma Jane decided it was time to bring the kittens out into the yard; my two out-of-state grandsons came to visit for several weeks. My son thought the nearly teenage grandsons should get to know me, and be taught Midwestern values in the process. ME, who worked third shift, if you get my point.
Somehow all of the kittens except Becky ended up down the covered cistern in the backyard—which completely baffled my darling grandsons. Thanks to my husband and daughter, the kittens were dug out and saved. Becky, a fragile kitten, acquired the nickname "Lucky" as she was the only one who didn't end up in the well.
Becky was one of the best cats we ever had. She would stay inside all day, sleeping, and spend her nights outside hunting. Becky didn't believe in using the litter box and would go outdoors to relieve herself, no matter whether it was raining, snowing or below zero. When she was ready to come back in the house, she would stand on the deck railing and knock on the backdoor, softly meowing for us. She was an independent cat, but always took the time to visit with us.
One sad fall day we found her laying in the yard. We suspect she ate something she shouldn't have eaten. She is buried in the private pet graveyard in our backyard.
