Catherine Romano was born Maria Antonia Teresa Caterina Romano in Ardore, a beautiful hilltop village in Reggio d'Calabria, Italy. She was the eldest child of Vincenzo Romano and Filomena Correale. She had a brother Giuseppi Pasquale and a sister Maria Annunziata, then her mother passed away and her father remarried to Rosa Critelli, they had ten children, two of whom died in infancy.

Her father immigrated to America in 1904, settling in Philadelphia. Catherine and her stepmother and two half brothers Tomaso (3) and Luigi (1) arrived in New York Harbour on 05 Oct 1905 aboard the ship "Prinz Oskar". They proceeded to Philadelphia to be rejoined with her father. Her brother and sister immigrated later.

Catherine married Francesco Aiello in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, PA on 27 Aug 1906, the son of Saverio Aiello and Mariagrazia Scalzo. Vincenzo had to sign permission for the marriage since she was a minor.
