Sgt. Robert A. Surber of Inverness, Florida graduated from Citrus High School in 2000. He enlisted in the military Jan. 10, 2002, and performed Initial Entry Training at Fort Sill, Okla. He reported to Fort Lewis on June 7, 2002 and was deployed to Iraq in June 2006. He comes from a family of servicemen. His uncle, Herbert, is memorialized on a monument in front of the Old Courthouse in Inverness recognizing those with local ties killed in the Vietnam War. American Legion Post 225 in Floral City also is named after him. Robert was someone who loved life and laughter, liked heavy metal music and loved the Miami Dolphins football team no matter how bad they played. He was someone who anyone would feel lucky to know. As a soldier he was in a category of his own. He was an individual, but a team player. He was hard working and always did what he had to do. Robert loved his family and friends dearly and lived life to the fullest. His favorite saying was "what does not kill you only makes you stronger." He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Herbert Surber. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal and the Combat Action Badge. Bobby also received the purple heart and bronze star medals. He was 24.
