Mrs. Sarah A. Cummings, a Kansas pioneer, 90 years old, died last Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. H. Askren, who lives two miles northeast of Hughson, California. The body was brought to Atchison, arriving this morning, and was accompanied by Mrs. Belle Moss, a nurse who took Mrs. Cummings three weeks ago to California.
Mrs. Cummings was born February 22, 1829, in Sullivan County, Tennessee, the daughter of Atchison County pioneers Hiram and Esther (Hamilton) Quiett. The family came to Kansas in the mid-1850s. Sarah married William Cummings in Cummings, Kansas on September 21, 1856. Her husband laid out the town of Cummings and it was named for him.
Mrs. Cummings is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Belle Askren, Hughson, California, Mrs. Mary Honza, Atchison, and Mrs. Britamore Laird, Cummings; two sons, Mr. Charles M. Cummings, Turner, Oklahoma and Will Cummings, San Francisco, California; Eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. E. Curry, Logan, Kansas, and a brother, Larkin Quiett, who lives near Topeka.
Mrs. Cummings will be buried from the church at Cummings at 10:30 o'clock tomorrow morning, the Rev. Miller conducting the service. Burial is in the Cummings cemetery.
