My mother's baby sister--my little aunt.

Buried in her mother's arms. Both died in childbirth during the night, at their home. My aunt rests in the same grave with her mother, but no mention is made of her. This child will never be forgotten, even if there is no marker for her.

This baby was not named because my grandfather was too distraught by this tragedy. I recently learned that the oldest sister, who was 10 at the time, remembered coming downstairs in the morning and my grandfather was sitting in a chair, crying in the kitchen. It was then she found out her mother and her newborn sister had died during the night.

A lady who is now well over 90 sang at this funeral when she was about 7 years old. She said it haunts her to this day that she peered into the casket and saw my grandma cradling her baby daughter in her arms.

My Mom was only 3 when this happened, and remembered that she was lifted up to look inside the casket at her mother and her baby sister. Afterward, she ran and hid in the closet. A sad memory.

Rest in sweet peace dear auntie.
