John Lakin was born at Grainthorpe, Lincolnshire, England, May 21, 1819. At the age of 25 he emigrated to America and a short time after his arrival here he found the farm which he afterwards owned and where he died. The parting words of his mother "you will not find contentment and peace until you find Christ" dwelt in his mind and during a revival held in the "old log school house" during the winter of 1846-7 he was happily converted and soon after joined the M E church of which he remained a member until his death.
On Nov 6, 1848 he was married to Huldah E Merrill who still survives him. A short time after their marriage they settled upon an adjoining farm where they remained until the spring of 1874 removing from thence to the farm where he died. Five children, three daughters and two sons were born to them of which a daughter and one son remain. Positive in his convictions he knew no middle ground between right and wrong, with unwavering faith through all lifes troubled scene he lived, leaving behind the heritage of precious memories, kind words, good deeds and a consistent Christian life.
