Josiah was listed in the 1860 U.S. Census, living in Freedom Twp., Wood County Ohio, 26 years old, a blacksmith with wife, Permelia, 24, and daughter, Mary 3 months of age, all born in Ohio. Josiah enlisted for Civil War army service in the 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered into Company F, Oct. 28, 1863. He died of pneumonia at the U.S. General Army Hospital at Cleveland, Ohio. The Hospital was located outside of the city limits in Brooklyn Township on University Heights, not to be confused with the present day eastern suburb of the same name, now called the East Tremont neighborhood. Brooklyn Township was not annexed to the city of Cleveland until the post-Civil War period.
Permelia applied for a widow's pension April 8, 1864 but it was denied. An application for a minor, dated Feb. 14, 1868, was issued at Certificate #155868, naming her second husband, Irad Goodsell, as guardian. Irad(born OH in 1820) and Parmelia lived in Nelson Twp., Portage County Ohio, according to 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census listings. There were 3 children in the household, which included Anna Linton, apparently from her first marriage to Josiah, born 1860. The 1860 census taker may have mistakenly recorded her name as Mary in 1860. Parmelia Goodsell died Nov. 26, 1895, and is buried in Prentiss Cemetery, Nelson Twp., Portage County OH.
