Edward enlisted for Civil War army service at Albany, New York in the 177th Regiment New York Infantry, Oct. 11, 1862. He was mustered into Company D, Nov. 21, 1862. Rank: Private. Edward died in the U.S. General Army Hospital at Cleveland, Ohio September 1, 1863, of typhoid. His remains were transported home for burial. The Hospital was actually located outside the city limits of Cleveland in Brooklyn Township in University Heights, now known as the East Tremont neighborhood, not to be confused with the eastern suburb of the same name. Brooklyn Heights was not annexed to the City of Cleveland until the post war period.
