The beloved Daughter of the late William Earnie and Reva Jane Mahanes Spicer , and the sister of the late Virginia Shaw Spicer, and the Beloved Sister-in-law of the late Jerry Allen Harris..She attended Cismont Elem. and Lane High School before graduating from Albemerle High School. In her junior year of high school she worked part time for Dr. Swanford at the Allergy Reserch Lab at UVA. During her senior year, she worked at Woolworths Variety Store. After graduating from AHS, she enrolled in a nursing course with 14 other students. At the completion of the 2-yr. program, only 5 students had completed the requirements-she-being one of them. This launched her long lengthy nursing careerof 32 yrs at Martha Jefferson Hospital, although her hospital traing began initially under the direction of the Pediatric Unit at UVA.Through this traing she gained experiance in the care of handling tiny infants. To advance her skills she took classes in Pharmacology, Intravenous Therepy, and in Coronary care. This allowed her to transfer to the Medical and Surgical Ward where she spent 10 yrs.. Her last stint at Martha Jefferson Hospital was in the "new" wing(south 5) which was the Orthopedic Surgical Ward. There she continued to work until her health failed. After enduring many of her own orthopedic surgeries she moved to The Cedars Nursing Home in Charlottesville Va, where she continued to try to help others by sharing her experiances in Nursing. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Cismont for many years before moving to The Church of Our Savior in Charlottesville.
She is survived by her brother, William Earnie "Bill" Spicer Jr. of Blackburg, Virginia; and her sister Elizabeth Ann Spicer Harris of Charlottesville; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" Markwood Spicer; two nieces Jane-Ashley Harris Skinner and Angela Shaw Harris Durrer, and their children.
The family would like to thank Dr. Chesler and his staff, as well as those who cared for her at The Cedars and at Martha Jefferson Hospital. The family would also like to thank the many other doctors who cared for her over the years and especially her friends.
And I'd like to thank Nancy for taking Michael E. Ward under her wing since he was new to Cedars Nursing Home.
