Della Pauline Riley Rasmussen

Della Pauline Riley Rasmussen, of Westminster, entered into Heavenly rest February 21.

Born in Adams County, she was the daughter of the late Norman E. and M. Alice Martin Riley.

Della graduated from Emmitsburg High School in 1932 and from University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1936 as a Registered Nurse. Upon graduation, she worked at the University of Maryland Hospital and entered service as a Red Cross Nurse.

She was called to active duty in the Army Nurse Corps in April, 1941, at Fort George G. Meade. In 1943 she was assigned to the 26th Field Hospital, Persian Gulf Command, Abadan, Iran, for two years, and for seven months in France.

During her service in World War II, she received the European Africa Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the American Defense Service Medal. Upon her return to the United States in 1945, Della was assigned to the 48th General Hospital, followed by assignments to Walter Reed Hospital, European Command, Bremerhaven, Germany, 98th General Hospital, Fort Bragg, and Fort George G. Meade.

Della was honorably discharged from the Army Nurse Corps in 1953 and later retired after 30 years of service in the Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Mrs. Rasmussen was a lifetime member of the Church of the Incarnation, United Church of Christ, Emmitsburg.

She was the wife of the late CW04, Robert L. Rasmussen, Ret'd, whom she married April 25, 1953, and is survived by her sister-in-law, Lalia S. Riley of Sykesville, MD; her nephew and his wife, Arthur and Vickie Riley of Westminster; and nieces and their spouses, Janet and Allen Colburn of New Windsor, MD, and Marjorie and Fredric Lohnes and Donna R. Riley, all of Westminster.

Her brothers, Ray David Riley and infant, Ernest Martin Riley, preceded her in death.

Interment with full military honors was in Arlington National Cemetery.
