Robin H. Jones, 83, of Connersville, died November 9, 2006 at Heritage House of Connersville.
Born December 4, 1922 in Liberty Township, Henry County, Indiana to the late George Herman and Bernice Esther (Hiatt) Jones. He was married on September 24, 1942 to Mary Ellen Hart, daughter of the late Howard Wayne and Lola Viola (Taylor) Hart of New Castle, IN.
Mr. Jones began his education in a little two-room red-brick school house in Ashland, IN, progressing through the eighth grade. He then attended New Castle Senior High School, graduating in 1940, and attended Wabash College in 1940-41. After working at Perfect Circle as a chemist for 1 year, he attended General Motors Institute of Technology in Flint, MI in 1942-43.
With the coming of WWII, Mr. Jones enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, and saw service on the USS LST 761 at Pearl Harbor, Saipan and Tinian; and then, at initial assault on Iwo Jima, where he witnessed the famous "Raising-of-the-Flag" on Mt. Surabachi. On two occasions shells narrowly missed him. However, extensive damage to his ship mandated its return to Pearl Harbor for repairs. Upon arrival at Pearl, he found transfer orders to the United States Coast Guard Academy at New London, CT.
On VJ-Day, each USCG Cadet was granted an Honorable Discharge…and was sent home. Upon returning home, he farmed the Jones family farm east of New Castle, IN.
Later Jones was made supervisor for Smith`s Jewelry Company in the central IND-ILL area, prior to buying the Connersville Smith`s store in March, 1952. After about fifteen years, Mr. Jones sold his store and was employed as a pricing specialist with Porcelain Steel Division of H. H. Robertson in Connersville. Subsequently, he became an agent with Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance. Mr. Jones retired from Farm Bureau after almost 20 years of distinguished service.
Mr. Jones belonged to and was an Honorary Life Member of Connersville Lodge No. 379 of the B.P.O. Elks, where he twice served as Exalted Ruler, was District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, and Club Manager.
He also had memberships in the Amvets, Murat, Shriners, Whitewater Valley Scottish Rite, Whitewater Valley RR Restoration Association, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, International Order of Turtles, Masonic Warren Lodge No. 15 F. & A. M., Valley of Indianapolis Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, NMJ and served on the Connersville ABC Board under Mayor Fred Bunzendahl.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Tim and wife, Carol of Rushville, a daughter, Patti and husband, Danny Harris of Connersville, grandsons Dennis Harris and wife, Barbara of Greenville, NC, Scott Jones of Erie, CO, and Darrin Harris of Waterloo, granddaughter, Rain Jones of Rushville, a great-grandson, Brandon Scott Harris, a brother, Herman Willoughby "Bill" Jones of Ventura, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death, besides his parents, was one brother, Charles Roscoe Jones.
Public memorial services will be conducted at 2:00 pm Monday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville with Pastor Gary Sutherland of the Harrisburg Union Church officiating. and the Elks Memorial service conducted by B.P.O. Elks #379. Interment of the ashes will follow in Dale Cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 pm until the time of service at 2:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Connersville Elks #379 Memorial Fund or to Harrisburg Union Church.
