Marian was a special needs child.
She was the daughter of Davey and Kathleen and sister to Billy, Jean, Lillian, Jacqueline and twin brother Davey.
It was common then for a father to take his deceased child and bury it himself.
The law did not require a funeral for children under 4 years of age. Most families then could not afford one or even a grave.
My dad and Uncle Davey buried Marian with my brother and sister. Later my granda would be buried in the same grave. (He could take care of the little ones).
After the burial Uncle Davey went to register the burial.
In the last few years as my dad's health failed he wanted some things taken care of. One was a headstone for his children and father.
My Sister Frances took on this task. As Marian was also in the grave it was only fitting her name should also be placed on the headstone.
As it turned out, it was not as easy a task to complete. There was no record of Marian's burial. Frances went to the Records office and searched the graveyard record books to no avail. After much investigation it was discovered that in his grief Uncle Davey had actually registered Marian as Mary Magdalene.
Uncle Davey will never live that one down.
The end result of this labour of love is the beautiful granite headstone with the stain glass window and the light of Christ shining through that you see on their memorials.
