Posey County
Indiana, USA
Death: Sep. 22, 1933
Delaware County

Daniel was the third child of Levi and Malinda Rhodes, born near the “Old Homestead” of Hill Grove. His grandfather, Abraham came from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia to Indiana in the 1820’s. Daniel J. would have known that his grandfather was important as Justice of the Peace besides having a large and prosperous farm. From this he would have heard of the journey the Rhodes made from Virginia, the Revolutionary War service of Michael Rhodes his great-grandfather in the Continental Army and his earlier accounts of the family massacre in 1763. Daniel J. would have grown up surrounded by extended family in Hill Grove. Daniel J. would have been to the old homestead home built out of logs by his grand-father Abraham. The church built in Hill Grove was on land donated by his Uncle Issac. Daniel J. was born on the 24th of May 1854 near Hill Grove. The run up to the Civil War was in full swing, the Missouri Compromise, the Fugitive Slave Act, soon the Dred Scott supreme count decision were inflaming passions on both sides of the Ohio River, more so with family roots in Va. The War came home in the summer of 1863. with the maelstrom of Morgan’s Raid when Daniel was 9. Daniel hid their farm horses in their corn field until the raiders departed for the Battle of Corydon. The War ended 1.5 years later, Lincoln assassinated, the slaves freed, the transcontinental railroad built and the Indian Wars on the great planes occurring. During this time life continued in Harrison Co. on the farm and Daniel grew to manhood, learning the skills and lessons he would need. On the 27 of Feb 1879 Daniel J. and Mary Elizabeth Fravel were married, in the Hill Grove Church. His first three children William, Eva and John were born in Harrison Co. His father Levi moved to Posey Co sometime in 1880, but Daniel followed about five years later in 1885. His next three children- Lula, Amzie and Herman were born in Posey Co. Trouble came into Daniel's life when Amzie Rhodes and his wife, Mary died in 1893. At this time in Posey Co. Daniel accepted the Lord and was a godly man the rest of his life. Daniel J and family moved back to Harrison Co He made his church home in Perseverance Chapel, where he obtained a “local preachers license”. Daniel J married again on 21 Oct 1894 to Rebecca Jane Marsh, whose family originally came to the Laconia area. She came into the marriage with one child, Alonzo. Daniel and Rebecca had 3 children- Bessie E. , Emma O. and Floyd. Something could be said about Daniel now. He said about his blended family that there were no half or step children they were all family-brothers and sisters. Daniel and Rebecca and family attended Perseverance Chapel. Rebecca died in 1920. He married Marietta Stonecipher in 1926. She died in 1929 and is buried in LaCrosse Ind near her previous husband. Daniel died in 1933 in Eaton, Ind
