SP5 Gearing's piercing image (see photograph to the right) was featured on the cover of the June 27, 1969 (Volume 66, Number 25) edition of LIFE, which highlighted the article "The Faces of the American Dead in Vietnam: One Week's Toll." In this article, portraits of most of the 242 young American men whose deaths were announced by the Department of Defense during the week from May 28 to June 3, 1969 were presented in a yearbook format, and resulted in a powerful public response.
Also KIA with SP5 Gearing in the same artillery attack was SP4 Jeremiah June (1948-1969).
SP5 Gearing was a graduate of Greece Olympia High School, Rochester, New York, class of 1966.
