SP4 E4. Infantryman. KIA in the Battle of Tam Quan during Operation Pershing. Company B, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 50th Infantry Regiment, attached to the 1st Cavlary Division, U.S. Army.
SP4 Shapard is remembered on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, with his name appearing on Panel 31E, Line 078; he also is honored on the Mountain View Memorial Park's Veteran's Memorial Garden, Boulder County Viet Nam Casualities memorial.
Specialist Shapard's awards for service in Vietnam include the posthumously awarded Silver Star for Gallantry, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was an infantryman (MOS 11B20) and qualified for the coveted Combat Infantry Badge (CIB).
The Silver Star citation, HQ, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders Number 1724, 21 March 1968, reads "For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, Specialist Four Shapard distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 10 December 1967, while serving as a rifleman with Company B, 1st Battalion (mechanized), 50th Infantry during a search and destroy mission near Bong Son in the Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force, Specialist Four Shapard exposed himself to the hostile fire as he placed effective suppressive fire on the enemy positions. While attempting to assault a hostile emplacement, Specialist Shapard was mortally wounded. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army."
