My father, Alfred John Potter, was onboard the Sarasota for the following operations between July 3, 1945 through April 2, 1946:
After availability at Seattle, APA204 embarked Army troops and, on July 18, 1945 again headed for Okinawa. She arrived in the Hagushi anchorage on August 12th and began disembarking her reinforcement troops and offloading her cargo. Three days later, hostilities ceased. On the 29th, the APA shifted to Naha to load her first contingent of occupation troops, units of the XIV Corps. On September 8th, she disembarked those troops at Jinsen, Korea. On the 14th, she returned to Okinawa, whence on October 1st she delivered marines to Chinwangtao. Following offloading, she assumed station ship duties in the Tientsin-Taku area. At the end of November, she was reassigned to transport duties, this time with the "Magic Carpet" fleet to carry servicemen back to the United States.
Operation Magic Carpet was the post-World War II effort by the United States Navy to bring troops home from Europe and the Pacific. Hundreds of Navy ships were involved; everything from aircraft carriers and battleships down to tenders and auxiliaries were outfitted with thousands of extra bunks, and made multiple round-trips during 1945 and 1946.
Sailing to Sasebo in early December 1945, she embarked units of the 5th Marine Division and got underway for San Diego, arriving on the 24th. Between January 9, and February 19, 1946, she completed a second "Magic Carpet" run.
She prepared for inactivation. In early March 1946, she moved to San Francisco for overhaul; and, in June, she was towed to Stockton. She was decommissioned on August 1st, and berthed with the 19th (Inactive) Fleet.
