Helen Catherine (Sister Helen) Klauk, age 87, of Millcreek, died on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Hamot Medical Center. She was born on January 3, 1922 in Madison, Maine, daughter of the late William P. and Martha Goodell Koenig.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Mark R. Klauk and a sister Laura Price.
She was a devoted wife to my father (married in 1941) and mother to myself and my four siblings. She was a 1940 graduate of Strong Vincent High School in Erie. My mother dedicated her life to helping people in need, always putting others before herself. A couple at her funeral, whome I had never met, indicated that she had resuced them many years ago from being homeless and had invited them to live in her home for several months while they got their lives in order. She volunteered with my father at the Emmaus Soup Kitchen for almost 30 years, only stopping about two years ago. Although my Mother was an Episcopalian, she was a Benedictine Oblate and was known as Sister Helen at the soup kitchen. She was a volunteer at Safenet, an organization to assist battered women, and had been on the board of directors. She spent the day at the shelter answering the phones two days before she entered the hospital (mid May). Earlier in my life, my mother was extremely active in Parent Teachers Association. She was also very active in the Episcopal Church Women, and was instrumental in early movements to ordain women as Priest in the Episcopal Church. In the late 1960's, she and my sister were arrested on the steps of the Pentagon for protesting the Vietnam War, while I was an active duty Air Force officer, stationed in downtown Washington, DC!
Helen is survived by her spouse of 68 years, Herman; sons Bill, David, and Paul; a daughter, Marcia; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Becky, Kimberly, Erin, Todd, Andrew, Ashley, and Avery; seven great grandchildren; and many other relatives and loved ones.
