|Death: ||Mar. 10, 1995|
Robert Proffer was a sweet man who spent his entire life living in either habilitation centers or group homes. When he was born, his mother was in a mental institution for treatment and because of this, they assumed Robert would also have the same condition and he was committed to a life spent in institutions. As a child, he was subjected to lots of medications and electric shock treatments.
When the state of Missouri started to deinstitutionalize people, Robert was finally able to have a somewhat normal home environment when he was placed in a group home. I was an employee of that group home and that is where I met Robert.
Robert was of normal intelligence and was well behaved. He worked hard at any task he was given and was very helpful. I was always amazed at how happy he was despite the situation he had spent his life in. He didn't have any known family and the only friends he had were those he knew from the group home and training center. But, that didn't matter to Robert. He still loved life and lived each day to its fullest.
Robert died in 1995 at the age of 51 after a bout with cancer. He was buried on county ground in Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, Missouri. Though buried in a potter's field, he had a lovely graveside service that was attended by many.
*********I still think about Robert and I miss him and his smile. I will continue to add to his page when I can. Usually when I think about Robert, I start to cry so it is difficult to work on his page but I will finish it soon. I want to make sure he is never forgotten.***********
