John was the son of Reuben Edward "Sig" Siegfried and his wife, Lena Anthony Siegfried. He married Anna Georgia Miller and became a loving step-father to her daughter, Leona. Anna had another daughter, Earla May, who died prior to their marriage. After Anna's death, he married Florence Riggs Anderson.
Grandpa John was one of the sweetest, kindest, most patient men I've ever known. One of my earliest memories is sitting on the back of an easy chair combing the hairs in his bald spot. My mother had done the same thing when she was a little girl.
He was also "sweetly ornery". As children, my siblings and I were raised to ask before taking the last serving of anything at the table. While visiting, Grandpa John took the last serving of gravy, then looked around the table and, in wide-eyed innocence, asked "No one wanted anymore gravy, did they?" To this day, we honor his memory by asking after the fact!
He married my great grandmother, Anna, in 1929. Their household included his disabled younger brother, Roland, and Anna's daughter, Leona. John's father later lived with them until he had to go into a nursing home. Then in the 1950's, after the death of Anna's mother, her father moved in with them until his death in 1959. During the nearly 36 years of their marriage, John and Anna never lived alone. Their home welcomed all and love was a staple. Although not related by blood, John was the father, grandfather and great grandfather he didn't have to be.
Heartfelt appreciation to "Mount Hope NY" for sponsoring this memorial.
