Death of J. Y. Sterne.
Death has again visited our midst and taken away another of our most honored citizens. On Tuesday morning, March 30, John Y. Sterne passed away, surrounded by loving friends who kindly soothed his dying pillow. John Y. Sterne was one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens. He was born in Stafford County, Virginia, in March 1800 and was consequently 80 years of age at the time of his death. He settled in Howard County, Missouri, on the farm now owned and occupied by F. K. B. Twyman, in 1824, but afterwards moved to Monticello, where he resided until his death. He was a life-long, consistent and zealous member of the ME Church, South. A Wife and six daughters - Mrs. D. B. White, Mrs. William White, Sr., Mrs. O. Henderson, Mrs. Ed. Harrison and Misses Anna and Fannie Sterne - besides a large number of grandchildren and great grand children are left to mourn his death. His funeral was preached by Revs. G. W. Penn and JO Swinney at the ME Church, South, this city, on Wednesday afternoon, before a large concourse of friends. The pall bearers were: TB Birch, Sr., J. F. Finks, G. H. Harrison, TG Shackelford, L. F. Hayden and J. W. Lewis. end
Death of Joyn Y Sterne, Esq.
This estimable gentleman and old citizen died at an early hour on Tuesday morning last, at his residence in Monticello, near Glasgow. For several weeks, he had been in failing health, sinking rapidly until his death. The deceased was a native of Virginia, born March, 1800, and consequently was just eighty years of age at the time of his death. He emigrate to this State in 1824, settling in Monticello, where he has resided ever since. His wife and several children survive him. Among the latter are Mrs. D. B. White, of this vicinity, and Mrs. O. Henderson and Mrs. Laura Harrison, of St. Louis. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, March 31, at the ME Church, South and was largely attended, Rev. G. W. Penn, his pastor, and Rev. Jas. O. Swinney conducting the service. He was at the time of his death the senior member of that church. Thus, one by one, the links are broken in the chain that binds the present to the past. end
