New Hanover County
North Carolina, USA
Elizabeth Salety "Lety" (maiden name unknown) Futch was born about 1775 in New Hanover County, North Carolina. She was the first wife of Solomon Futch, Sr., and they had eleven children: John Futch, Thomas Futch, Elizabeth Futch Mattox, Jacob Futch, Isaac Futch, Sarah Ann Futch Driggers Baxter, Margaret Mary Ann Futch Duggar, Solomon Futch, Jr., Rowan Futch, Samuel Futch, and Delilah Futch Strickland. Elizabeth died about 1815 at about age 40 in Bulloch County, Georgia and was probably buried in an unmarked grave in the Red Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Bulloch County, near her husband.
Lety and all her direct female descendents and their brothers are of the matrilineal clan of "Katrine" (mtDNA haplogroup K). DNA matriline testing reveals that is the same matrilineal clan the 5,000-year-old "Ice Man" found in the Alps is from. Katrine was one of seven women from whom almost everyone of European ancestry is descended. Katrine lived about 15,000 years ago on the southern slopes of the Alps in northern Italy near present-day Venice, Italy. Her people were hunters who lived on ibex and chamois and supplemented their diet with roots and small mammals. About 10% of people of European ancestry are descended from Katrine.
Thanks so much to the late Joy Blankenship and all the Futch family genealogists for much of this information and especially to John Wise and Alfred Chassereau. Any errors, however, are mine alone. Please go to the "edit" link on this site with any corrections or additions.
