PFC Francisco A. Martinez Flores
Birth: 1982, Mexico
Death: Mar. 25, 2003, Iraq

Marine Pfc Flores was assigned to 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center, Twenty-nine Palms, California. Flores was killed during convoy operations when his tank plunged off a cliff into the Euphrates River. Francisco moved to California from Mexico at age three and joined the Marines so he could go to college. His mother said he had many aspirations, including becoming a detective or stockbroker. Francisco was to become a U.S. citizen in two weeks, but the 21-year-old Marine was killed before he could take an oath of allegiance to the country for which he died fighting. He was granted U.S. citizenship after he died. In his last letter, Francisco, the eldest of four children, told his family not to be afraid. "He said, 'Pray for me."'
