Vera E. McKenzie was born Jan. 4, 1925, in Northampton, Pa., the daughter of Howard and Florence E. (Huber) Spengler and had been an Ashtabula resident since 1957.
She graduated from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing. Vera served her country during WW2 in the Army Nurse Corps, McGuire General Hospital, Richmond Virginia.
Prior to her retirement, she worked as the head pediatrics nurse at Ashtabula General Hospital and had also helped with nursing instruction at KSUAC. She also worked a period of time at a VA hospital in Cleveland, OH.
A member of Lake Avenue United Methodist Church, she loved being with her family, playing piano (by ear), playing cards, especially pinochle, 500 and canasta. She was also especially fond of the Christmas holiday season.
She had five children: Dennis (Peggy) McKenzie of Naples, Fla., Vicki McKenzie of Long Beach, Calif. and Diane (Dave) Goudge, Mary Lou (Bob) Carlo and Kathy Cochran, all of Ashtabula, and the late daughter Denise Valerio. 17 grandchildren: Jennifer, Scott, Shaun, Ian, Skye, Aaron, Julie, Ryan, John, Paul, Elizabeth, Jade, Samantha, Ronnie, Tyler, Jesse, Casey, and numerous great-grandchildren.
One brother: Dallas Spengler of Bath, Pa. and the late Emerson Spengler of Lebanon, PA.
One sister: Gloria Hartzell of Hamburg, Pa.
