Charles W. McClain, age 83, retired Indiana State Highway engineer, died, Sunday, in the Hendricks County Hospital following an extended illness.
Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon from the Hall-Baker Funeral Hall in Plainfield. The Rev. Warren Robbins officiated with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery there.
A well-known Plainfield resident, and a native of Hendricks County, he was born June 3, 1889, the son of Jerry and Mary Bailey McClain. On March 11, 196, he was married to the former Mary Barlow in Plainfield, who survives.
A graduate of Purdue University with the Class of 1915, he was a specification engineer for 42 years with the Indiana State Highway retiring in 1964. He was chairman of the maintenance committee of National Highway Research Board; member of American Society of Professional Engineers, and one of the first engineers to be licensed in the State of Indiana as a Professional Engineer.
He was a member of the Plainfield Christian Church and elder emeritus; board of directors of the Plainfield Savings & Loan for over 30 years; 50-year-member of the Plainfield Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star; Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine of Indianapolis.
Surviving with the widow are two children, Mrs. R. B. (Charlene) Shumaker, Cleveland, Ohio, and J. Warner McClain, El Paso, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. L. J. Mills, Bloomington; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
