He was a 1944 graduate of Newport News Apprentice School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, 1944-45. After the war, Tom worked as a plumbing and heating contractor.
On April 9, 1944, he married Gladys May Garber of Palls, King William County, Va.
They had three daughters. The Covingtons made their home in Hopewell, VA. Tom fought a courageous battle against cancer. He was survived by his wife and daughters, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
