He was born on the Mehl Farm #3 called "Tuene" in Rosendal.

According to "Emigrants from Kvinnherad sailing from Bergen 1874-1930" No. 1592-1598, Johannes Thorbjornsen Mehl and his family sailed on 16 May 1883 from Bergen on the "State Linie". He was 14 years old when his father, Thorbjornsen Mehl (46), mother, Elisabeth (age 44) and siblings, Iver (11), Martha (9), Britha (7) and Knud (10/12) left for the United States. The family came from Kvindherred, all of them having been born there. Also traveling with the family was Christopher Christophersen Mehl (age 14), and Lars Johannesen Øie (18).

His father took the English name "Thomas Johnson" after coming to the US so did he, becoming John T. Johnson.

He married Mollie Olsen on 29 August 1896 in Clatsop County, Oregon.

John T. Johnson (30, Jan 1870 Norway) appears in the 1900 United States Federal Census (09 June 1900) for Astoria (Ward 3), Clatsop County, Oregon (page 8B, family 168, 1472 Grand Ave). He and Malina Johnson (25, Dec 1874 Norway) have been married 4 years and have two children, Bertha O. Johnson (3, Nov 1896 Oregon) & Lizzie J. Johnson (1, April 1899 Oregon). They were living with her brother, Peder O. Vige (29, Sept 1870 Norway) & widowed mother, Siri Vige (61, Aug 1838 Norway, 5 children, 4 living). John immigrated to the United States in 1885 and was naturalized. Malina & her mother and brother immigrated in 1874. Peter was also naturalized. John was a Street Car Motor man. Peter was a night watchman for the Street Car Company.

J. T. Johnson (41 Norway) is found in the 1910 United States Federal Census (8 January 1910) for Astoria (Ward 3), Clatsop County, Oregon (sheet 4B, dwelling 190). He and Mollie Johnson (39 Norway) have been married 13 years and have two children, one living, Levea Johnson (13 Oregon). Also in the home was John's single brother-in-law, Peter O. Vige (42 Norway) John immigrated to the United States in 1883 and was naturalized, Molly arrived in 1872. John & Peter were teamsters.

Johnson (50 Norway) is listed in the 1920 United States Federal Census (8 January 1920) for Knappa, Clatsop County, Oregon (sheet 4B, dwelling 96) along with his wife, Molly Johnson (49 Norway). John immigrated to the United States in 1883 and Molly in 1879. They became naturalized citizens in 1896. Their daughter Levy M. Johnson (23 Oregon) is living with them. John was a fisherman on the Columbia River.

John T. Johnson (61 Norway) in counted the 1930 United States Federal Census for Knappa, Clatsop County, Oregon. He was 28 when he married his wife, Molly O. Johnson (58 Norway). She was 25 at the time. One child is living with them: Olivia Johnson (34 Oregon). John's occupation was a "Gillnetter" in the "fishing industry". His cousin, Carl G. Johnson (52) and his family are living next to them. Carl is also a gillnetter.

Ill for 2 years before his death as reported in Astoria paper.

John T. Johnson, 63, died at his home in Knappa late Saturday evening. He had been a fisherman in the district for about 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mollie Johnson; one daughter, Levy Johnson, of Knappa and two sisters, Mrs. A. Abrahams and Mrs. Bertha Johnson, both of Knappa.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the E. B. Hughes chapel with Rev. P. Loland officiating. Interment under the direction of the E. b. Hughes mortuary, followed in Greenwood cemetery.
