On 17 April 1858, Grazia Sarubbi was born in Accettura, Matera province, Basilicata, Italy which was where her parents (Giuseppe Maria Sarubbi and Giulia DiLorenzo) lived.
Grazia married Vincenzo Cafarelli, (son of Domenico Cafarelli and Maria Gaetana Mastronardi), in Accettura on 28 February 1876.
With his eldest son, 8 year old Domenico, in tow, Vincenzo emigrated to New York City in 1886 aboard the St Laurent from LeHavre-Brest. On the ship's Manifest, Vincenzo described himself as a 'farmer'.
We know nothing about that trip: where or how long they stayed nor where Vincenzo worked nor what little Domenico did all day ......
However, seven years later, the entire family (which consisted of a total of 7 children ranging in age from 16 year old Domenico to newborn Federico) sailed into New York Harbor aboard The Chandernagor.
This time, the Ship's Manifest lists both Vincenzo and Domenico as 'masons'.
According to the 1900 US Census, the entire family lived together in the East Village at 401 East 11th Street, New York. Vincenzo has been an unemployed stonemason for 5 months .... It doesn't mention whether Dominick has been working but sister Giulia is working as a dressmaker and brother Giuseppe is a barber. We know that little Federico did not survive but this Census makes no mention of Maria ~ perhaps she has also passed away......
Five years later, in 1905, finds the family still living in the East Village at 330 East 11th Street. Now, Vincenzo & Dominic are working as bricklayers. 19 year old Julia is a dressmaker and 17 year old Millie is a saleswoman.
Grazia and Vincenzo were home owners in 1910 at 584 15th Street in West New York, New Jersey. Living with them are children: Susie, Nichola, Florence & Mildred. Vincenzo was a self-employed stonemason.
By 1920, Grazia is 59 years old and still living on 15th Street but with an ever-expanding family. Not only are daughters, Julia, Susan, Millie and Florence at home but also Julia's two children (Juliette & Anthony Varula), Susan's husband (Anthony Aliano) and Millie's husband, (Anthony Garone) and their son Eugene!
It looks like Vincenzo is now retired but his two sons-in-law are working. Anthony Aliano is a 'chauffeur' or a truckdriver; Anthony Garone is an 'elevator operator' at an Insurance Building.
Julia has her own Dress Shop and Florence is a 'weaver' at a Silk Factory.
Although Julia describes herself as married, she might have been widowed by this time.
By April, 1930, Grazia has been widowed for 8 years. We find that she has moved back to the East Village apartment/condo (which she still owns). The whole family is living with her, including Susan's 5 children.
Grazia died in West New York, New Jersey, on 28 October 1936 and was buried two days later at Holy Name Cemetery.
