KEARNEY - Charles W. Baxter, 86, of Kearney died Friday, Sept. 7, 2007, at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at O'Brien-Straat-mann Funeral Home with the Rev. Dean Pofahl officiating and military honors by the Nebraska National Guard Honors Team in conjunction with American Legion Post 52 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 759. Burial will be later.
There will be no visitation. The body will be cremated.
He was born March 30, 1921, in Lincoln to Frank and Ruth (Gordan) Baxter.
On Sept. 21, 1961, he married Edna Thompson in Coudelaine, Wash.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Kevin of Abilene, Kan., and Alan of Laporte, Colo.; daughter, Cindy of Tacoma, Wash.; sister, Norma Jean Dresen of Yuma, Colo.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Additional survivors include his daughters-in-law, Rhonda Baxter of Abilene and Pat Baxter of Laporte.
He grew up in Kearney, Hastings and Omaha, where he attended school through the 11th grade. He entered the U.S. Navy on March 24, 1942, and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 30, 1946.
He and his wife lived in Tacoma, where he worked as a welder. In 1985 they moved to Kearney, and he continued to weld locally.
He was a member of The Salvation Army for many years. He enjoyed woodworking and metal sculpting. He was a blacksmith at Fort Kearny for the Civil War re-enactment. He loved his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Virgil Hubbard; and his grandparents Jerome and Minnie Gordon.
