Obituary in THE TIMES AND DEMOCRAT, Orangeburg, SC, 5 Oct 1958:
Mrs. Ellen Murphy Chavis, 72, died at a Columbia hospital at 8 a.m. Sunday after an illness of about six months. Mrs. Chavis is the widow of the late J. Harmon Chavis and
she was the daughter of the late John and Melissa Bates Murphy of Orangeburg County.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 3 p.m. at the North Side Baptist Mission on Amelia St., by the Rev. Wilbur Johnson with internment to be in Two Miles Baptist Cemetery near Bolentown. Thompson Funeral Home is in
charge. The remians will be at the Funeral Home until the hour of services.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Ollie Mae Bullard Chavis of Orangeburg, Mrs. S. B. Myers of Cope and Mrs.
John Smith of Atlanta; four sons, C. L. Chavis of Camden, J. G. Chavis of Columbia, S. B. Chavis of Charlotte, and Laurie Chavis of Orangeburg; two sisters, Mrs. P. M. Moore and Mrs. D. K. Binnicker both of Columbia, Mrs. Sam
Hogue and Mrs. D. E. Miskelly, both of York, and Mrs. Keller West of Springfield; four stepsons, W. W. Chavis of Baltimore, J. J. Chavis and G. R. Chavis of West Columbia and L. H. Chavis of Branchville; 20 grandchildren and
nine great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be E J Lackey, B H Medlin, Glen Hunter, Wilbert Bolin, Newton Burke and John W. Gaskins.
