Joe was the fifth child out of eleven children born to Isham and Livanah Purvis Ivey.
He married Lucy Ophelia Steinwinder on 26 Jan 1858 in Clark County Mississippi. To this union was born one daughter, Carrie Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ivey
On March 8, 1862 he was enlisted by Robert McLain in Enterprise Mississippi as a private in Company B, 37th Regiment Mississippi Vols. On July 6, 1863, after being captured at the Battle of Vicksburg, he signed the Loyalty Oath and was released.
After Lucy's death, he then married Francis (Fannie) Roseberry. To this union was born two sons, Charley B Ivey
1872 – ? and William Kelsie Ivey 1880 – 1941.
