He married, first, about 1844 at Ashtabula,OH, Julia Ann Woodbury. She was a daughter of William Woodbury and Esther (Beckwith) Woodbury. One child by this marriage. She died at Ashtabula in December 1853.

He married, second, April 1855 at Ashtabula,OH, Rebecca Ann (Loyer) Throne, and there were seven children of this marriage.

Children(by first marriage): Marinda Avery (c1846-c1875) and several others who died young, including Sarah AAvery and Edward K Avery.

Children(by second marriage): Amy Roselma Avery Munger, Edward Emmet Avery, Minnie Avery Tyler, George Washington Avery, Ella Clementine Avery Garvey, Hattie Elina Avery Krebs, and Ira Everett Avery.
