Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Riley Edward Goad, 71, of Fayetteville, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, in Womack Army Medical Center on Fort Bragg.

He was born on March 23, 1935, to the late Mose and Annie Mae Goad in Draper. He grew up in Mayodan, spending most of his childhood there before entering the military.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He served his country proudly with honor for over 31 years prior to retiring. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and numerous commendations and medals.

He received his master of business administration from Webster University and his doctorate in education from Columbia University.

He loved the game of golf and participated in many golf tournaments.

Riley will be remembered as a man that could get things done regardless of the obstacles; more importantly though, he will be honored and cherished as a husband, a father, a friend, a protector, a provider and a patriot.

He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Faye Goad of Fayetteville; a son, Carl Edward Goad of Charleston, S.C.; and a daughter, Debra Lynn Goad of Boone.

He is also survived by a granddaughter, Bonnie Lynn Pritchard, who is currently stationed in Iraq.

He is also survived by a brother, Roy Goad of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Margie Chilton of Eden; and a nephew, Jeffery Frensley of Fort Bragg.

Funeral services for retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Riley Edward Goad will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Rogers and Breece Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Smith officiating. He will be laid to rest in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery with the rendering of full military honors.
